If you are stopped in your car:
- If they ask, show the police your driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance.
- If they search your car, tell them you do not consent. That may protect you later. (Sometimes your car can be searched without a warrant.)
- If the police suspect you are drunk driving, they will ask you to take a breath-alcohol and coordination test. If you fail or refuse to take the tests:
- you will be arrested & they can search your car
- your driver’s license may be suspended, and
- your car may be taken away.
This is a 1-minute video about your legal rights and responsibilities when you are stopped by the police in your car.
