If your income is low and you need affordable housing, there are two main ways to get help:
-
Subsidized Apartments: The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) helps apartment owners offer cheaper rents to people with low incomes. To apply, you need to contact or visit the management office of the apartment buildings you're interested in. There are also some rental programs run by the state and city of New York. You can find more information by visiting HUD's website.
-
Public Housing and Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8): To get help with these programs, you should go to your local Public Housing Agency (PHA). Some PHAs may have long waiting lists, so you might want to apply at more than one. They can also give you a list of places where you can use your housing voucher. You can find more information about them on HUD.gov.
