Here are some safety tips, if immigration officers (ICE) or police try to talk to you. Your right to protect yourself depends on where you are. You have the most rights inside your home, and less rights out in public. Learn about your rights and practice what to do if you are approached by ICE or police. You might be able to delay or avoid arrest, or make it harder for ICE to deport you.
- Create a plan in advance with your family and friends.
- Keep calm, do not run.
- Do not answer any questions. Exercise your right to remain silent. If you decide to answer any questions, remember not to lie.
- Do not sign any documents.
- Do not carry fake documents or show them to officers.
- Do not carry your home country's passport with you.
- Carry a card that reminds you of your rights.
- Post a flyer inside your door to remind you of your rights.
