This month, we would like to highlight Stella N, a LiveHelp Volunteer for LawHelpNY.
LawHelpNY.org helps New Yorkers with low-paying employers to solve their legal problems. Our real-time online chat service, powered by dedicated volunteers, helps guide users to self-help materials, legal aid organizations, and court information. Stella shares her story and recent experiences as a LiveHelp volunteer.
Please share a little about yourself and your journey through law school.
I earned an LL.B. degree followed by a Master's degree in law. Recently, I graduated with a Master's in Human Resources, all from institutions in the United Kingdom. I have always been passionate about using the law as a tool for justice and empowerment. Over the years, I gained practical legal experience working in various international law firms, primarily focusing on commercial litigation. I firmly believe that the law should be accessible to everyone. Volunteering as a LiveHelp Operator allowed me to support individuals as they navigate complex legal issues and make a positive impact in their lives. Providing legal guidance, connecting people with essential resources, and empowering them to feel confident about their rights has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my legal journey.
What valuable skills do you acquire as a LiveHelp Operator?
Although I was in this role for three months, I have learned a great deal. One of the most vital skills I acquired as a LiveHelp Operator is effective communication. This experience has also allowed me to enhance my teamwork skills. Additionally, I have developed more empathy, which is often overlooked in the legal industry. Understanding someone else's perspective and being able to provide the accurate information they need is essential.
How has this experience shaped your personal and/or professional growth?
I value the interactive nature of this role, as it allowed me to connect directly with vulnerable individuals and understand their situations on a deeper level, which has improved my active listening skills. I also want to emphasize the importance of the training we received. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to ask as many questions as I needed. The support from Aimee and Maria made me feel more confident in my role. This has been a life-changing opportunity for which I will always be thankful.
What wisdom would you impart to those considering volunteering?
My advice is to approach this opportunity with an open mind and a willingness to learn. The most important skills are your ability to listen and empathize while guiding people toward the right resources. The training and support from the coordinators are excellent, so I encourage future volunteers to make the most of this training opportunity and to ask as many questions as they need to feel comfortable in this role. A bonus skill is to be a fast typist, especially when managing multiple chats. Stay compassionate and remember that your contributions are valuable.
Thank you, Stella!
