These are step-by-step instructions to help you connect with a notary over video. Virtual notarization is temporarily allowed during the Covid-19 pandemic for some forms.
How to get your signature notarized virtually
I need a notary for my form, but I can't go to one in person.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Governor Cuomo has issued an Executive Order to allow notarization of legal documents without needing to be in person.
This is sometimes called remote notarization, e-notarization or virtual notarization. This option will be available at least until August 5. If you plan to use this option after August 5, check this page for updates.
In order to get your signature notarized remotely you will need to have access to the following:
- a smartphone with a camera OR a computer with a webcam
- a scanner and email OR a fax machine
- one or two witnesses
You will also need to have access to the instructions that go with the form you are signing. Some forms have specific instructions for signing and sending.
I am ready to sign my form. What do I do next?
Use the following instructions along with the form instructions to make sure you are completing the form properly.
Step 1. You will need to contact a remote notary and schedule a time that the notary is available to notarize your document.
Try calling one of these businesses to see if they are offering remote notary services:
- Banks
- Parcel Shipping Stores (UPS, FedEx)
- Print Shops (Kinkos, Staples)
- Pharmacies
- Tax Preparer or Accountant Offices
- Real Estate Firms or Real Estate Offices
- Law Firms or Law Offices
Step 2. When it is time to connect with your notary, use your computer and/or phone to connect to the notary so they can see and hear you. Say to them “I am currently in New York State.” If you do not know the notary personally, you will need to show them your photo ID.
Step 3. When the notary tells you, initial or sign and date the form in the space for your initials or signature. Check the form instructions to know where to initial or sign. You will then disconnect from the notary.
Step 4. On the same day, send the entire document to your notary. There are some documents that must be faxed or scanned. There are some documents that you can simply take a photo of with your phone and send those photos. Please check the form instructions to see if you need to send it to a notary in a specific way.
The notary should then notarize and return it to you by fax or scan and email.
Step 5. Print the page that shows both your signature and the notary’s signature and stamp. Take out the pages that are not complete and in their place, add the page with the notary’s signature and stamp. Keep the pages you took out for your records.
