Who We Are
The Urban Resource Institute (URI), is the largest domestic violence shelter provider in the country with approximately 1,000 shelter beds located in New York City. Recognizing the critical need to provide immediate legal services to shelter residents, URI established the Domestic Violence Legal Education and Advocacy Program (LEAP) in 2006. LEAP utilizes a comprehensive, multi-layered approach to addressing the legal needs of victims of domestic violence through early intervention, innovative education and specialized legal services. LEAP offers legal advice, referrals and brief assistance on family law issues, such as custody, visitation, orders of protection, child support and divorce, and criminal justice advocacy. LEAP provides direct representation to undocumented residents who have remedies under the Violence Against Women Act.
