You have the right to get help in your language at the Social Security Administration (SSA). The SSA provides a free interpreter when you ask for one.

Get help, even if you have someone with you who speaks your language. A professional interpreter knows the SSA terms and can provide a more accurate interpretation of important details.

If you have a hearing and the interpreter doesn't speak your language or isn't helping you understand, you can:

  • tell the officer or administrative law judge about the language barrier, and
  • ask for a delay if no one is available.
