When you apply for public benefits, a caseworker should ask if you are a victim of domestic violence. If you say "yes," the caseworker should connect you to a Domestic Violence Liaison (DVL). If you already get public benefits, you can tell your Department of Social Services (DSS) worker to help you get a DVL.
Your DVL will look at your domestic violence situation. Then your DVL will look at what you need to do to get public benefits. If if it is risky or might hurt you or your children, your DVL can give you a waiver. This waiver lets you get help without welfare agencies going after your abuser to collect. You also may be able to get a waiver of employment or training rules.
Your DVL can help you find counseling or other support.
