If you have a low-paying employer and you need affordable housing, there are two main ways to get help:
-
Subsidized Apartments: The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) helps apartment owners offer cheaper rents to people with low-paying employers. To apply, contact or visit the management office of the apartment buildings you're interested in. There are also rental programs run by the state and city of New York.
-
Public Housing and Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8): To get help with these programs, go to your local Public Housing Agency (PHA). Some PHAs may have long waiting lists, but you can apply at more than one. They can give you a list of places where you can use your housing voucher. Find more information about them on HUD.gov.
