What You Need to Know About Getting SSI for Children
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program that pays benefits to children and adults with disabilities who have limited income and resources. Learn more about how to apply and how to appeal a denial below.
If I have a child with a disability, can I apply for SSI for them?
Yes.
Your child might qualify for SSI if:
- Your child never worked and
- Your income and resources (as the parent) are not too high for SSI and
- The child has a mental and/or physical condition that limits what they can do and
- That condition has lasted or will last for at least one year (or may lead to death).
How do I apply for SSI from the Social Security Administration (SSA)?
You can:
- Start the application online. You will fill out the online Child Disability Report and after that a Social Security representative will contact you by phone, OR
- Apply over the phone at 800-772-1213
